Versace Calls In The Supers To Sex Up Milan Fashion Week

Versace promised to transport us to Versacepolis, “a utopian settlement on the seabed ruled by Medusa,” for spring/summer 2021. No mean feat considering viewers had to undertake this “aquatic journey” via livestream from their laptops. To jazz up things down under, Donatella Versace called upon a shoal of supers to show off her “hidden treasures”.

Irina Shayk, Adut Akech, Joan Smalls and Anna Ewers all took us into the blue, a setting which had captivated Donatella, after she learnt that 80 per cent of the ocean floor is completely unexplored, unmapped and unseen by human eyes. “Until today, that is,” she quipped via Instagram. Someone alert David Attenborough! Versacepolis is surely worth the Blue Planet presenter’s attention.

Under-the-sea uniforms are as glamorous as one might expect from Donatella, who last season called upon J Lo to model the wisp of a tropical dress that launched Google Image Search in 2001. Jennifer missed the boat to Versacepolis, but Shayk and co gave their slinky starfish-printed mini dresses serious pop star swagger. Akech looked particularly taken with her flippy frock with ruffled hemline and rhinestone bralet, while Smalls no doubt had cropped cardigan fans, including EmRata and Kendall Jenner, immediately bookmarking the fuchsia twin set for next summer.

Covid-19 travel restrictions have caused issues for models who would normally walk multiple runways in each fashion capital, but where there’s a will, Donatella will find a way to bring her glamazons to town. “Nobody needs a lot right now,” the designer, who has been “dreaming of another world and escapism”, told British Vogue prior to the spring/summer 2021 showcase. “But don’t forget the glamour, the supermodels, the hair and make-up!” Indeed, the modern-day supes called to mind the catwalk queens that were synonymous with Versace’s all-out glamour in the ’90s. Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford modelled the brand’s first fashionable trip surfing for spring/summer 1992. Those rhinestone sea shell bralets still look ocean-fresh almost two decades on.
