The BFC Announces 2019's NEWGEN Recipients

The NEWGEN class of 2019 has been announced. Ahluwalia Studio, Art School, Asai, Bethany Williams, Bianca Saunders, paria \Farzaneh, Roker, and Stefan Cooke will receive financial support, mentoring and showcasing opportunities for the first time, in addition to existing NEWGEN designers A-Cold-Wall*, Alighieri, Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, Halpern, Isosceles, Matty Bovan, Nicholas Daley, Per Götesson, Richard Malone, Richard Quinn and Supriya Lele who will continue to receive funding. Eftychia takes the baton from Bianca Saunders and paria \Farzaneh as the British Fashion Council’s “One to Watch”, and will be allocated an exhibition space in the London Fashion Week Designer Showroom, along with the rest of the NEWGEN family.

A snapshot of Britain’s most innovative and inspiring designers, NEWGEN has aided the career trajectory of 249 creatives, including Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Erdem Moralıoğlu, Jonathan Anderson, Roksanda Ilinčić and Simone Rocha, since its inception in 1993. This year’s panel – which is led by Sarah Mower MBE, BFC ambassador for emerging talent, and also includes Vogue’s Carol Woolton and Olivia Singer – took into account each brand’s creativity, aesthetic and point of difference, as well as its ethical behaviour.


The shortlisted designers for the 2019 BFC Fashion Trust grant, a charity strand of the organisation that also offers financial aid and mentoring, have additionally been unveiled. Aries, Eudon Choi, Hillier Bartley, Huishan Zhang, Marta Jakubowski, Molly Goddard, Mother of Pearl, Nabil Nayal, Paper London, Paula Knorr, Roberts, Wood, Sharon Wauchob and Wales Bonner are under current consideration, and the recipients will be announced on May 20. Last year, the BFC Fashion Trust awarded grants totalling £380,000 between eight designers, and it has awarded over £2million to 42 businesses since the scheme was founded in 2011.

Both announcements precede the winner of the 2019 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, which will be made public on May 1. £200,000 of the £2.3million for the BFC raised last year for its charities and support initiatives will be portioned off for the recipient – a career-shifting cash injection that has the potential to transform a brand’s future.
