Jimmy Choo’s Moon-Covered Marine Serre Collaboration Is A Gen-Z Dream Come True

Marine Serre’s crescent moon print has become a form of Gen-Z currency. Seen scattered across the sci-fi catsuits, second-skin long-sleeve tops and tights endorsed by the likes of Dua Lipa, Rosalía and Beyoncé, Serre’s instantly recognisable pattern has sky-rocketed the designer to cult status. Now, the motif is decorating the surfaces of Jimmy Choo footwear, as Marine Serre embarks upon a collaboration with the storied shoemaker.

“She’s very much the champion of a new way of thinking about the future in fashion, and that drew me to her,” says creative director Sandra Choi, who first met the French designer back in 2019. Serre arrived wearing a vintage pair of Jimmy Choo boots – the 5cm-heel Faro style from autumn/winter 2000 – which she had spent hours searching for on the internet. “It’s one of the few shoes like this – pointed, high-heeled – that’s comfortable, that you can bike in. So I thought: okay, it would be interesting to meet with Sandra and Jimmy Choo, to see what we can do together,” Serre says.

Together, they have designed six styles that pay homage to the DNA of both brands, and practicality, function and comfort lie at the heart of the creative union. Serre’s cherished Noughties-era Faro boots have been reimagined with our lockdown lifestyles in mind: the low-heel, pointed-toe and sleek upper from the original design are key elements of the new stretch jersey calf-length and ankle boot shapes, each of which boasts Serre’s now familiar moons. “It’s always fascinating to connect to this mindset of a new generation, looking at shapes from the past that are interesting to them, again. It helps my work: it shifts my viewpoint,” Choi remarks.

The same 5cm heel is seen on the Mary-Jane style, available in sprightly cherry-red or snow-white shades, while elevated 10cm heels feature on the classic stiletto pumps. According to Serre, “It’s important to have constraints when you make a collaboration – so we had to start from a base or shape that exists, for the purposes of time – but also to understand and to have a connection with the people that you work with.”

There are flats, too: the sturdy lace-up Kato high boots – inspired by flexible fabric footwear worn for martial arts and boxing – and Kato-Lo trainers are ideal for those who aren’t ready to relinquish their slippers just yet. Available to buy on 17 February at Mytheresa.com, when Marine Serre will also unveil an exclusive 28-piece clothing capsule with the e-tailer, Serre’s spin on Jimmy Choo’s are guaranteed to be a hit with her growing fanbase.
