Penelope Cruz Turns Jewellery Designer For Atelier Swarovski

From the age of seven, Penelope Cruz took a pen to her favourite fashion magazines, and redesigned the clothing and jewellery on the pages. “I didn’t have any jewellery growing up,” the actress tells Vogue. “Just a few tiny earrings and a red garnet ring from my grandmother, Modesta.”

Now 44 and a household name owing to her Academy-recognised acting roles, Cruz has created a ruby carnet ring in homage to Modesta. The token is just one piece in her Atelier Swarovski fine jewellery collection, crafted from Swarovski-created diamonds, Swarovski-genuine topaz and 18-karat Fairtrade gold, and marks the jeweller’s commitment to conscious luxury. “Before speaking to Nadja [Swarovski] I didn’t realise that it was possible to create stones in a lab,” Cruz recalls. “When I saw how much she cares about not creating a negative impact on the environment, it was very inspiring.”

Cruz kicked off the design process by sending the Swarovski team some 300 images of things she loves, and then spent hours “as a humble student listening and learning” as the designers distilled the clippings from movies, novels, paintings, ballet dancers and vintage markets into a jewellery collection that told her story.

“It’s not a fake project where you just give your name to a brand, I have been part of every decision,” she maintains. The Swarovski-created diamonds were formed in the Atelier’s state-of-the-art laboratories, the Swarovski-genuine topaz was sourced from traceable supply chains in Brazil, Tanzania and Sri Lanka, and the Fairtrade gold was mined from the Minera Limata Limitada co-operative in Peru. “I don’t have to lie about anything in the collection," she adds.

Cruz debuted her jewels back at the opening ceremony of Cannes Film Festival. Wearing vintage Chanel on the arm of her husband Javier Bardem, she says it was a "huge moment" for her personally, and as a member of her new family. “They are writing a new chapter and I am part of that,” she shares, before heading to her official launch party at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.
