Gucci Takes Its Commitment To Sustainability One Step Further

Gucci has announced that its effort on sustainability is now entirely carbon neutral. The Italian fashion house says it will offset all remaining greenhouse gas emissions on a yearly basis from its own operations and the entire supply chain through its projects that support forest conservation around the world. The result of these factors allows Gucci to declare that its supply chain has successfully become carbon neutral.

This achievement adds to Gucci's longstanding efforts to minimise its environmental impact, and, as the brand confirmed in a statement, "the urgent need for climate action."

"A new era of corporate accountability is upon us and we need to be diligent in taking all steps to mitigate our impacts, including being transparent and responsible for our GHG emissions across our supply chains," added Marco Bizzarri, president & CEO. "Gucci will continue to work in a smart and strategic way to avoid and reduce our impacts, while simultaneously investing in innovation as a driver for sustainability."

While Gucci's commitment to its own environmental impact is applaudable, Bizzarri continued that the efforts thus far are not enough and more needs to be done. "This is just not enough nor will it happen fast enough given the sustainability challenges we are up against in our industry and the reality of our global climate and biodiversity crises," his statement continues. "To address the need for urgent solutions, Gucci is setting an ambitious new precedent through our carbon neutral commitment. This is based on a clear strategy to ensure we account for all of our GHG emissions across our supply chain, act to first avoid, reduce and restore, and then offset the unavoidable emissions through important REDD+ projects.”

Previously, the house announced its 10-year sustainability strategy driven towards meeting environmental profit and loss targets in 2025. Last year, Gucci confirmed it was on track to achieve the targets having already ascertained a 16 per cent reduction of its overall footprint across its supply chain since 2015, relative to the company's own growth.
