Harry Styles Is Reporting For Duty In Gucci

Fresh from his Greased Lightning makeover, Danny, sorry Harry, Styles, put his Gucci ambassador cap on for the My Policeman premiere in LA. The performer eschewed his usual ’70s-leaning aesthetic and plumped for stripped-back modernistic tailoring for his time in front of the cameras. In lieu of oversized collars, he chose a round-neck finish. Double-breasted tailoring was out in favour of a belted jacket, and flares were substituted for slim-cut trousers. This was Harry Styles, the actor, not the popstar, reporting for duty.

Indeed, there was something faintly constable-like about the cut of Styles’s black Gucci get-up. From the discreet but handy breast pockets to the polished boots, Harry’s press uniform evoked pictures of him as Tom, a Brighton-based law enforcement officer entangled in a love triangle, in Michael Grandage’s ’50s-set film.

Of course the inspiration behind the suit was rather more niche than cops and patrolmen. The slick two-piece comes from Alessandro Michele’s Gucci spring/summer 2023 collection, entitled Twinsburg, and inspired by his “two mothers”, Eralda and Giuliana. On the Milan runway, Styles’s strict two-piece was modelled by two identical twins as the creative director explored the concept of identity. For Harry, who lives a parallel existence as one of the biggest singers in the world and a private 28-year-old trying to keep his normal life under wraps, this duality will perhaps have struck a coord.

As a house collaborator, Styles might be obliged to wear the latest Gucci collections, but the cross-cultural and decade-spanning references of his friend Alessandro never feel forced for a man who likes to send a message with his fashion. From Grease tributes to experimental merman costumes and pared-back red-carpet looks, there’s no crime in keeping us guessing.
