The 2020 Met Gala Theme Has Been Revealed

If you found the theme of last year's Met Gala a little befuddling, you're in for a real treat. The theme of the Costume Institute's next big fashion exhibit was announced today, and it's perhaps the most obscure one yet.

Inspired by Virginia Woolf and French philosopher Henri Bergson (who's famous for his theory on Duration), “About Time: Fashion and Duration" will be a sartorial timeline of sorts from 1870 to now, and aims to "explore how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate the past, present, and future." Clocks and excerpts of Woolf's writings will surround the 160 womenswear pieces on display.

Es Devlin, the mastermind behind Beyoncé’s “Formation” tour set, will design the show, while Louis Vuitton's Nicolas Ghesquière will chair it alongside Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and, of course, Anna Wintour. The exhibit will open at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 7, 2020; as always, the Met Gala, fashion's Oscars, will take place on May 4, 2020.

While abstract, the theme is certainly timely, no pun intended, considering the current landscape of fashion, what with the rise of technology and consumption. But how will it translate on the famous pink carpet? Only time will tell.
