How To Tie A Babushka, According To A$AP Rocky

Tying a scarf, as mundane an action as it is, is actually a bonafide artform. Just take it from Parisian scarf designer Iracema Trevisan, who hand-paints limited-edition silk accessories under the name Heart Heart Heart – there’s undeniably some technique behind mastering the classic long fold, the backward banana, the knotted double loop, or the bandana. A$AP Rocky’s favourite way to tie a scarf, obviously, is the babushka headwrap. He first debuted the style on The Daily Show, but his most memorable early babushka moment came soon after, when he walked a red carpet in Los Angeles in a rosy, floral Gucci headscarf. Rocky’s worn the style many times since, and he even solidified his obsession for posterity with his song “Babushka Boi” from earlier this year.

Now, Rocky is giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the process behind his signature babushka. Rocky was in Stockholm for a tour date, which marked the first time he’s been back in the Scandinavian country since his month-long sentence in a Swedish prison (an ordeal he referenced during the show by performing inside a cage at one point). While in town, he documented the process of tying his serpent-adorned Gucci headscarf, which matched his Gucci monogram pants. It’s simple: Rocky first lets it sit atop his head, pulling it behind his neck, after which he sets a double wrap with a knot under his chin. Somehow, watching Rocky tie his babushka doesn’t ruin the magic of it all – it just makes us want to give it a try.
