Harry Styles Just Got Brilliantly Candid About His Androgynous Style Formula

From his frilled Gucci shirt and Vermeer-esque pearl earring at the Met Gala to his glittery denim jumpsuit by Archie Alled-Martínez at this December’s Jingle Bell Ball, Harry Styles has firmly cemented his status as a style icon in 2019 – particularly one who has no interest in traditional gender norms.

Now, if his penchant for gloriously camp details failed to get the point across, he’s making his refreshing thoughts on androgyny clear once and for all as he drops his second LP, Fine Line. “What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that,” the 25-year-old revealed in an interview with The Guardian. “If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay? Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though… I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.”

That sentiment defines the former One Directioner’s aesthetic for Fine Line, featuring an album cover shot by Tim Walker, in which Styles wears custom Gucci chosen by his long-term stylist Harry Lambert. Take the music video for lead single “Lights Up”, which sees him appear in looks ranging from a bespoke periwinkle suit from Harris Reed to a chiffon rose shirt from queer Swedish brand Lazoschmidl. ““I think it’s a very free, and freeing, time,” Styles continued. “I think people are asking, ‘Why not?’ a lot more. Which excites me.”

Fans looking for a taste of Styles’s signature style are in luck. The singer is hosting pop-up shops in London through 19 December – and while there’s no Gucci for sale, the limited-edition merch, including T-shirts, satin bomber jackets and more, still have a touch of the singer’s aesthetic.
