Katy Perry’s Gaultier Met Gala Maternity Look Would Have Been A Real Moment

Instead of the steps of the Metropolitan Museum, Katy Perry used her Instagram feed to unveil her 2020 Met Gala look. “What would have been,” as Perry put it, was a plush Jean Paul Gaultier corset designed especially to accommodate the pregnant star’s growing bump. The day after the scheduled date of this year’s ball (postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus outbreak), Perry shared the inspiration behind her maternity look with her 95.1 million followers: the corset famously worn on Gaultier’s spring/summer 2010 runway by a heavily pregnant Jourdan Dunn.

The original padded breastplate/conical bra hybrid was created to fit around Dunn’s baby bump, and Jean Paul Gaultier had been working on an homage to the signature runway piece for Perry – who included a heartbreak emoji in the caption on her Instagram post – but the global lockdown means the look was never completed. Perry is expecting a baby girl with her fiancé, the actor Orlando Bloom, in the summer.

Many celebrities see the Met Gala red carpet as an opportunity to showcase skin-baring dresses or extravagant trailing gowns, but the singer has always stayed true to her undeniably quirky personal style. The seven-time attendee’s roster of outlandish looks over the years has included a candy floss pink dress fitted with LED lights, a towering pair of angel wings, and a dramatic veiled scarlet Maison Margiela gown. And who could forget last year‘s appearance, when the star scaled the stairs dressed as a chandelier before pulling off a swift outfit change into a hamburger costume? We’re praying the event is rescheduled in time for Perry to make this maternity wear moment happen.
