Alexander McQueen & Bottega Veneta´s Virtual Distractions

It seems everyone is using quarantine to perfect an array of hobbies or tune into HouseParty to catch up with friends over a solo wine. Meanwhile, fashion houses have taken to social media to present their offerings of the ultimate self-isolation activities.

From cosy Bottega Veneta movie nights, to an ongoing series of artistic projects from Alexander McQueen, there’s something for everyone. And, while your old school friend has suddenly emerged as an avid baker on Instagram, your distant relative is a poetry enthusiast and your neighbour is a TikTok dance routine superstar, why not take inspiration from fashion industry leaders and try something new?

Bottega Veneta

The multifaceted “Bottega Residency” sees talent take over the Bottega Veneta social channels (YouTube, Spotify & Instagram) to present a variety of interactive content. As creative director Daniel Lee says: “Creativity and strength lie at the heart of Bottega Veneta. In this highly distressing time, we feel a responsibility to celebrate those values and ignite a sense of joy and hope in our community and beyond.” Live music, recipes and movie nights are all on the agenda for the brand’s latest endeavour. Clear your schedules.

Alexander McQueen

If you’re a fan of McQueen archive imagery (and who isn’t) then now is your moment. “McQueen Creators” is a new project conceived by the brand that encourages followers to engage artistically with their favourite Alexander McQueen pieces, to be shared across their social media channels – from 3-D creation to home-embroidery, the brand has your weekend plans sorted. The creative concept changes each week and will include digital tutorials from the brand’s teams and collaborators. Now in its fourth instalment, the most recent project encouraged followers to illustrate silhouettes from Alexander McQueen’s spring/summer 2020 womenswear and autumn/winter 2020 menswear collections. Renowned artist Howard Tangye shared his drawing and painting techniques on film to inspire those involved.

The brand also announced the #McQueenMusic initiative which will allow followers to stream music from Alexander McQueen shows in their homes. A nine-hour soundtrack – edited by longtime McQueen collaborator John Gosling – will soon be available on their Spotify channel.

Loewe

The #StayAtHome period means that art gallery and museum visits aren’t currently possible. Not to worry: let Loewe’s “En Casa” initiative satiate your art cravings. Its series of online workshops, tours and events will be streamed through Instagram Live on weeknights and weekends, bringing together previous artistic collaborators of the brand and finalists of the Loewe Craft Prize to celebrate “craft, innovation and artistic expression”.

JW Anderson

JW Anderson has instigated an online Q&A series and encouraged its followers to choose who they’d love to ask questions. “We’re making videos from home with some of our favourite people and we need YOU (included in those favourite people) to participate,” read a statement on the brand’s Instagram feed. Tyler Mitchell was the first in the hot seat, while Justin Vivian Bond and Anthony Turner have also answered fans questions on the channel. This week’s guest is none other than Iris Law. Stay tuned.

Gucci

In need of some lighthearted entertainment? Look no further than Gucci’s latest collaboration with sexual wellness podcast, The Sex Ed. The Italian fashion house’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, has featured in an exclusive episode as part of The Sex Ed’s 12-part Season 3. In the interview with its founder, Liz Goldwyn – which was recorded in the Gucci Hub after the autumn/winter 2020 womenswear show in Milan – Michele discusses “his erotic relationship to nature, why Rome is his mistress, moving beyond confining modes of masculinity and how he channels orgasmic energy every day.” The series will also feature vibrant illustrations by Black Women Animate – “a creative studio which hires and supports black women, women of colour and non-binary people of colour.” Tune-into Thesexed.com to listen now.

The brand have also started a new initiative entitled #GucciCommunity which encourages followers to donate the Covid-19 Solidarity Fund. The latest hashtag has seen artists and musicians contribute films and stills to the Gucci Instagram feed – creative director Alessandro Michele kicked off proceedings with a picture of him reading from his home in Italy.

Valentino

#ChezMaisonValentino is a new series of performances that will be streamed on Instagram Live from Valentino’s main channel. Alicia Keys was the first to take to the virtual stage and treated followers to tuneful live renditions, while poet Rupi Kapur was the most recent guest of the initiative. The brand’s longstanding collaboration with those in the arts (FKA Twigs performed at its autumn/winter 2020 show) means that there will no doubt be an exciting roster of stars in the pipeline.

Anya Hindmarch

Feeling overwhelmed by never-ending emails? Anya Hindmarch has launched a series of “labelled workshops” that the brand will stream on Instagram Live in the coming weeks. Several guests have been invited to discuss methods of organisation and tips on how to stay sane during this time of self-isolation. “Manage your inbox,” “how to organise your life” and “declutter your life” have been the most recent topics of conversation on the channel – and we encourage that you have (another) Marie Kondo moment.

REDValentino

In these unprecedented times, keeping in touch is becoming evermore important. REDValentino has launched a digital communication project which encourages followers to send a thoughtful note to their loved one. The brand has commissioned three artists – Charlotte Farmer, Ollie ST Clair Terry Matteo Giuntini – to take inspiration from REDValentino’s spring/summer 2020 collection and design their own version of unique stamps. Those who want to participate can download a letter template, select a stamp gif and upload to their feed using the hashtag #DearestRED. A selection of the best messages will be shared on REDValentino’s stories section.
