"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer," it said. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
Bowie - who exploded on to the music scene in 1969 with the release of Space Oddity - changed rock music and fashion with his love for experimentation and pushing the boundaries of what was accepted. His style was celebrated with a standalone show at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2013.
"For my generation he was the number-one hero, performer and songwriter, and no artist caught that period - in particular between 1969 and 1977 - better than David Bowie," said Nicholas Coleridge, chairman of the V&A and managing director of Condé Nast, this morning. "I had been a fan for 42 years, since I first saw him performing Starman on Top Of The Pops - I was watching it in the tuck shop at my school at Eton and was immediately captivated. I'm just so glad that the V&A Museum retrospective about him was put on in his lifetime so that he was able to sneak in one morning and see it. It's an enormous loss, because he was one of those people who bestrode many worlds from music to performance, fashion - all of it."
Bowie is survived by his wife Iman and two children. The model married the British singer in 1992 and they welcomed a daughter, Lexi, in 2000. Bowie has a son, Duncan, from his first marriage to Angie Bowie, and was also stepfather to Iman's elder daughter, Zulekha.
