So desperate are people for Bella Hadid to be working again, that when a model (who looked a bit like Bella but a lot like a brunette woman) closed Diesel’s spring/summer 2024 collection in Milan, social media commentators hurriedly bashed out celebratory tweets and Instagram reels. “Oops it’s not Bella?” @CoutureIsBeyond clarified after some big name accounts were hoodwinked into hope. “I need you all to look into my eyes and bffr. This is not Bella Hadid,” @itgirlenergy added.
Suffice to say: Bella Hadid did not make an appearance. It was Dalton Dubois, a London model who made her fashion week debut with Burberry in 2022 before walking for Acne Studios, Alexander McQueen and Givenchy during the autumn/winter 2023 season. Apparently chiselled from the same stone as the new-gen super, a cursory scroll through Dubois’s Instagram will reveal comments like “Bella?” and, “You remind me of Bella Hadid!” and, “I legit thought for a sec this was Bella Hadid”.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Glenn Martens cast Dubois to inspire confusion. “For me, it’s about being sexy, optimistic, active, and focusing on denim,” the designer said of his appointment at the brand. “But it also has a fun factor with many twists.” This is the same person who invited SFX artist Alexis Stone to attend his shows dressed in Mrs Doubtfire and Jennifer Coolidge prosthetics. By all accounts, this entire debacle is symptomatic of the pressures that social media pundits feel when reporting on breaking news. To which I would add: Google is an excellent resource!
