Rihanna Subverts the Trench Coat Not Once, But Twice

When Rihanna does classic fashion, she does it in a completely Riri-fied way. The pop star and beauty mogul touched down in Dubai this weekend, where she hosted events for her Fenty Beauty line, and took the business trip as an opportunity to tackle a serious style challenge – could the timeless trench coat be subverted? The short answer is yes: she styled the piece two different ways that felt fresh and not at all dated.

First up, Rihanna chose to wear a custom Monse trench-dress. With its short hemline and big crystal belt buckle, her twisted take on the staple proved that covered-up clothes can still convey sex appeal. She wore similarly coloured beige stilettos by Giuseppe Zanotti, rectangular sunglasses by George Keburia, and mounds of jewellery.

Next up, she put on yet another belted coatdress, only this time in satin and designed by Riccardo Tisci for Burberry. She is one of the first celebrities to wear his new pieces for the heritage label, following in the footsteps of stars such as Beyoncé, who wore his creations while on tour. Accessories such as Manolo Blahnik’s strappy sandals and Stalvey’s mini top-handle bag rounded out the second ensemble.
