Burberry Announces Riccardo Tisci As Chief Creative Officer

Burberry has named Riccardo Tisci as the brand's chief creative officer effective March 12th.

Tisci will replace Christopher Bailey who announced he was stepping down last year, and presented his final autumn/winter 2018 collection for the house over London Fashion Week. Tisci joins Burberry after more than a decade at Givenchy, where he was creative director from 2005 to 2017. In his new role, which will see him relocate from Paris to London, he will direct all Burberry collections and present his first for the brand in September.

“I am honoured and delighted to be joining Burberry as its new chief creative officer and reuniting with Marco Gobbetti [who served as CEO at Givenchy from 2004 to 2008]. I have an enormous respect for Burberry’s British heritage and global appeal and I am excited about the potential of this exceptional brand,” Tisci said in a statement this morning.

Of the appointment, Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said: "Riccardo Tisci is a true visionary. I look forward to him taking Burberry to new heights."

Marco Gobbetti, CEO of Burberry, added: “I am delighted that Riccardo is joining Burberry as chief creative officer. Riccardo is one of the most talented designers of our time. His designs have an elegance that is contemporary and his skill in blending streetwear with high fashion is highly relevant to today’s luxury consumer. Riccardo’s creative vision will reinforce the ambitions we have for Burberry and position the brand firmly in luxury.”

News of Tisci's announcement saw Burberry's shares rise almost 4%, owing to his reputation for redefining Givenchy as a sensual, streetwise house that aligned itself closely with music and culture. Over his 12-year tenure he created tour costumes for Madonna, Beyoncé and Rihanna, art-directed the visuals for Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne album, designed one of the highly-publicised wedding dresses of Kim Kardashian West, and collaborated on projects with artist Marina Abramovic. Since exiting the brand, he has continued to flex his streetwear nous via his ongoing collaboration with Nike.
